See Beautiful Bell Rock Apr 06, 2017
Natural beauty abounds in Sedona and the surrounding area. Bell Rock, at 4919 feet, is one of the most popular places in Sedona. The formation has taken millions of years to form. This area was once a tropical beach oasis and over millions of years the sea level rose and fell resulting in the different types of rock that formed Bell Rock. The red layers are "Schnebly Hill Formation" and the white layers were formed when salt flats combined with sand, the hard rock on the top is Fort Apache limestone where minerals deposited by the vast inland sea compacted into limestone. The beautiful red of the rock is from water leaching through the sandstone and carrying iron with it to stain the sand particles red. There is a pretty easy hiking trail leading from the Bell Rock Vista Parking Area to, and up, Bell Rock.
