BELIZE - NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO PROBLEM   Belize is such a comfortable country, where “No shirt, no shoes, no problem” is not just a slogan; it’s a way of life. One of my favorite tunes pokes fun at us crazy Americans who go on vacation and decide to “buy a piece of heaven and live the good life.”   Dennis Wolfe, the song’s author, is an entertainer in San Pedro & Caye Caulker, Belize. He writes a column, “Wolfe’s Woofers” for the San Pedro Sun. Thi...

Saturday has arrived, and we pack up slowly and with dragging feet. The night before, we arranged to have a water taxi pick us up bright and early to take us to airport and then from there we are getting picked up to go to the Maruba Jungle Resort. I had spotted a pamphlet for the Maruba Jungle resort, with this colorful add that showed these people pained in mud and photgraphed in the jungle... I was intrigued. Turns out the resort has a special two treatments, transportat...

Tropical Storm Arthur
posted by:
Feb 18, 2008 - Aug 21, 2008
Tropical Storm Arthur formed on Saturday May 31st, 2008 and made landfall in Northern Belize on the Yucatan Peninsula before becoming the first storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The rains from tropical storm Arthur compounded the effects of tropical storm Alma which had developed in the Eastern Pacific on May 27th.   Heavy rains throughout Belize caused rivers across the country to overflow. Together, storms Alma and Arthur brought approximately 15 inches of rain over 36 hours a...

If you asked me to plan out the perfect day, I would repeat today over and over again.  Today was simply amazing.  We docked in Belize before sunrise and boarded and air conditioned bus that drove us out of Belize City.  The city itself is nothing to write about, the true beauty of Belize is in the country side.  Full of rolling hills, farms and orchards the countryside is stunning.  Our ride lasted us about 45 minutes and led us to a restaurant ar...

Journey Across Belize
posted by:
Aug 20, 2006 - Aug 27, 2006
Belize was a tender port as Grand Cayman had been. But, Carnival Miracle anchored considerably father offshore this time. The tender took about 10 minutes to travel from the ship to the dock in Belize City. Here, we connected with our tour to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich. This turned out to be quite a wonderful tour and way to experience the country. It was not only an all-day tour to Xunantunich, but became a tour of Belize City and of the country itself. We had two gui...

Today we are leaving. It has been a great trip and we have done so many fun things. We decide to do one last thing before we leave. At the time, I had no idea how memorable this day would be. Since we all had some long flights ahead, we thought it would be a terrific idea to end our trip with a relaxing massage. Last night, at our condo, Janene sees a flyer for a spa in Belize city that looks intruiging. Our condo makes the arrangements, and we are set. We have to wake up super ea...

Carnival no longer offered the Shark Ray Alley snokle. After reading it was one of the best dive spots I wanted to see it. So I found a private  tour company owned by Americans, but run by locals in Belize, called Coral breeze Limited see www.coralbreezelimited.com. Our ship tendered off shore and we were late getting into the tourist village. I was a bit concerned but quickly saw people with Coral Breeze Limited signs they were holding up, they waited for us. The first group was for Whi...

My mom, my sister and I met up in Belize for a week-long vacation. The tiny Central American country has a reputation for excellent natural preserves (both above and below the ocean), and fantastic Mayan cities. We were psyched for both! We flew in to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, the only international airport in Belize. It is very small, but there's a restaurant and a bank, and several stores. We arrived around noon, so we had a bite to eat at the restaurant before continuing o...

Semester at Sea sometimes runs quick reunion trips for alumni and their friends/family. One of my friends was an SASer and decided she wanted to go with them to Belize this winter. I tagged along. The entire thing was only four days, one of which was spent on land. To make the most of it, we did a packaged excursion to Xunantunich, a Mayan site near the Guatamalan border. Also included are a few photos from the ship and the harbor of Belize City where we landed.

Cave Tubing
posted by:

The second half of our all day excursion to the ruins - we combined it with a cave tubing tour.  It was awesome but too much to combine on one day....we were late getting back and missed the first cave.  And do not take a digital camera...even if it doesn't fall and get wet - the humidity and moisture in the cave ultimately led to the demise of my new camera! :-(
