Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Fort Odessa Reviews
Short day trip from Odessa Jul 01, 2010
SO i originally planned to go to simferopol for a few days to explore and visit the cave town chufut-kale.. unfortunately due to time constraints i could only take a day trip. I found out abotu this place from a local tour company in Odessa. The cost round trip from Odessa was $85. That included the trip there and back as well as tour guide fees and entrance fees. Turns out it was money well spent... not because of the fort but the fact that on the way back from the fort we got pulled over by the cops n one of their notorious check points. Because i did not actually want a tour guide at te fort the money i had given the tour company for her was used to pay the "ticket" we were written.
As for the fort itself, really there isnt much to see. As i said i opted to not take the guided tour instead choosing to walk around on my own. My self guided tour really only lasted 30 minutes.. Simply because im familiar with the construction and purpose of many of the old forts and castles. The fort itself is not very well kept and you can see quite a few signs around telling you not to climb on the walls. You can also find many beer bottles laying around the grounds and the grass is kept unusually high in the courtyard.. they also have on display some miniauture trebuchets and afford you the opportuinty to take pictures dressed in the garb of greater times in the fort. There is also a little restaurant there. the prices are for tourists but if you can talk an Ukrainian into buying your food for you, its MUCH cheaper.
All in all visiting isnt something i would plan my vacation around but for a short day trip when you have the extra time in Odessa, i would defintiely reccomend it.
