Excellent Belgian Food and Beer May 22, 2009
8th Street in the Capitol Hill area is teeming with good eateries. One such example is Belga Cafe at which one should feel comfortable either all dressed up or in casual attire prior to going to a Nationals game. They have both indoor and outdoor seating when the weather is nice. They have one of the most extensive lists of Belgian beers that I have seen from Grand Cru bottles to their own brew on tap to lambics. They not only carry authentic Belgian beers but also American microbrews made in Belgian styles. The same is true of their menu which consists of traditional Belgian standards as well as inventive fusion dishes. They also serve seasonal tastings. While I was there, they had a list of dishes all inspired by fresh asparagus. I started off the meal with a duck consommé that was presented by pouring the broth over cubes of foie gras and dried morels. For the entrée, I had pork tenderloin from the asparagus menu that was served with pork belly, morels with sauce over mashed potatoes and of course asparagus. The meal was accompanied by a bottle of N'Ice Chouffe the winter seasonal from La Chouffe.
