After getting stung for a taxi from the airport to the city, which was just 8km away (R$30, but I wasn't in a position to bargain at 3am in the morning!), I got to hostel and was relieved to find it was open. I had visions of getting there and finding it all locked up and having to wander the…

When I was planning my trip at home, my initial plan was to take the boat from Manaus to Belem, which takes 5 days. As I heard people complaining about the trip being so boring, I decided to sell my boat ticket and take a flight to Belem. Except for some historical buildings and the ver-o…

The Peter Allen song starts "I've been to cities that never close down, New York and Rio and old London town" So I thought why not use the song to plan my trip? Add Tokyo and Lisbon, starting Dec 5.
Include New years eve and Carnival in Rio and check the Iguazu falls from the Argentine side.
My good friend Dave Wylie found me an apartment in Copacabana right near the beach, another good friend from my home in Surfers Paradise, Sudzie, said "hey mate I am coming with you to Rio".

My 2nd time through Brazil, I felt there was one last obstacle in South America for me to "conquer" -the Amazon. But it all started out in Rio with the Mecca of Brazialian Jiu-Jitsu, the legendary Gracie Barra Academy. Good times, interesting country.

14 September:Very boring day today, nothing is open in Sao Luis on a Sunday (apart from a few museums). We visited one small museum in the old centre, the Casa do Nhozinho in Rua Portugal, which had a good collection of local fishing items, puppets from carnival and travelling puppet shows an…

To get to the coast we booked passage on an Amazon riverboat - fun, but
not quite the romantic journey we'd imagined. It's cramped,
air-conditioned, and ruled by a couple of stern kitchen ladies who
control your daily schedule. More like joining the Navy than taking a
cruise.

Where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic, the city of Belem marked the end of our Amazon river boat experience. Having completed the 48-hour boat journey and arriving in Belem at 7am, we got the local bus to the bus station and booked ourselves onto the midday bus to Brasilia, a mere 36 hours away…
