    I had no plan to visit Malaysia on this trip other than to use it as a hub for Indonesia. I had been there 6 years ago and wasn't too impressed. Its overpriced by Asian standards and lacks a definitive culture that many of its neighbors claim. But this time I went to the Perhentian Islands and Borneo and a few places in between. While I wouldn't say its a 'must' for anyone other than nature freaks and divers willing to overpay, it grew on me and I had a good time...

    Another boattrip further upriver and you end up with the 'up river' people, the 'Ulu'. We arrived in Belaga in time to catch the last bit of the Bungan festival which is celebrated on the same days as Gawai but has a slightly different meaning as it's not related to the harvest season. Belaga has 2000 inhabitants and there's really not much to do except visit longhouses in the neighbourhood.
