Well there is plenty to see in (and around) Beijing. You really have to see the Great Wall (and climb it too ;), Tienanmen Square (and everything around it) and The Forbidden Palace. If you have the patience you can stand in line on Tienanmen square and visit Mao's Mausoleum.
The Summer Palace is a really amazing place to see too. Another thing you can do is just start exploring. The Hutongs are a great place to visit. Yes poor people are living there, but it's something you really have to experience. The people are really nice there, well you should still be careful of course but that's something you need to do everywhere you go. The Hutongs are something you won't forget :). If there still are some because i believe a whole bunch will be broken down because of Beijing's 'image' for the Olympics....
Also there are a few temples (like the Llama temple and the Temple of Heaven), the Imperial Academy, and the Ming graves (i believe there are other imperial graves too) you can go visit.
And if you have the chance...go see the Kung-Fu show. It is really amazing to see. And make sure you try Peking Duck too!

Yep, I agree these are must see things, u can also visit the Underground Palace of Dingling. Try to find a Chinese travel agency which is situated adjacent to the South West corner of Tienanmen Square. You will get Chinese prices for trips to The Great Wall of China. I paid 160 RMB for mine (Great Wall + visit to Underground Palace + lunch).
Taxi aren't that expensive so if you want to get to Summer Palace I would recommend to take one and it shouldn't cost more than 60 - 70 RMB.
