Befana. May 24, 2017
The word befana derives from the Greek "epiphany". which means apparition.

Befana is a ugly old lady who brings sweets to good children and carchoal to naughy ones. She brings these the night between january 5 and 6.

One of the legends about this character is that the Three Kings were going to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus. They met an old lady (befana) and asked her to go with them. She refused. Later she regretted their offer and went to lots of houses where children lived to take sweets to them, hoping to find baby Jesus in one of these.

In various towns and villages on january 6 you can find a man or woman disguised as befana who gives some sweets or candies to children.
