Beechmount Country House Hawkshead Reviews
A true treat Apr 10, 2011
My boyfriend and I stayed for three nights at the Beechmount Country House in the lovely village of Near Sawrey in the Lake District.
The owners, Garry and Denise, have lovingly and tastefully restored this beautiful house and deserve a lot of credit for the care, thought and energy that has clearly gone into the process. Denise greeted us on arrival with a friendliness, cheerfulness and good humour that characterised our stay at Beechmount. We immediately felt at ease (not always the case with B&Bs). Garry and Denise are passionate and knowledgeable about this magical part of the world and we really enjoyed the banter and the chats with them.
We stayed in the Grizedale Suite, which was spacious, luxurious but at the same time homely. Lots of personal touches make the room feel extremely welcoming. Evidence of attention to detail abounds. The ensuite bathroom is enormous. In keeping with the style of the house generally, the style of the Grizedale Suite is what I would call 'muted country' - so, traditional but with a focus on quality rather than chintz. The bedsheets are luxuriant and the pillows are abundant - the bed itself is like a return to the womb - the perfect place to allow weary limbs to recover.
We got friendly with the couple staying in the Esthwaite Suite and had a good look around and we can confirm this room is similarly inviting. Perhaps the major advantage of the Esthwaite Suite is that it has a separate living area with table and chairs by the window overlooking Lake Esthwaite - beautiful. In fact we got so friendly with this couple that on the last evening we went for dinner with them at the Jumble Room in Grasmere (an awesome restaurant that I'd been to a few times before, brilliantly run by a similarly personable and down to earth husband and wife team). I first went to the Jumble Room about three years ago and it is as special a place to eat now as it was then - testimony to the commitment and passion of its owners. We booked the Jumble Room late and were only able to get a table for 21:15 - which meant the pub was closed when we finally rolled out. When we got back to the house Garry and Denise, as if reading our minds, had left a bottle of wine and four glasses for us in the living room. I have to say that this was pretty typical of the unobtrusive way that they try to ensure that their guests enjoy themselves during their stay.
Garry and Denise have arranged the rooms so that the B&B section of the house is quite separate from their living area and I think they may even have their own entrance to the house. Personally I think this works really well as sometimes with B&Bs or chambres d'hotes I've felt a little bit uncomfortable, almost like an intruder in someone else's house. This was definitely not the case at Beechmount where the balance is spot on.
As you can probably guess, the breakfasts are also excellent. My boyfriend and I had the works each day and we didn't even think about eating again until supper.
We've stayed in loads of B&Bs / Chambres d'Hotes in England, Wales and France and this one is the best we've visited - by a significant margin.
