Bedouin Short term camp Nov 26, 2016
Bedouin Short term camp was to be our sleeping place during our Sahara experience and Camel riding thing… There are few of this small camps in the area, all catering tourist that are coming for the sunrise, sunset and some taste of the sand in their mouth. Around Merzouga, the sand dunes are not that big. It is the area that covers only 5 x 20 km or maybe a bit more. Despite that small size, locals managed to make huge marketing campaign capturing lots of people that wanna taste of Sahara.

This camp is associated with Abuerge La Tradition, and it is made of blankets stretched over the frame in the square “kind of Bedouin” style and with the small passages that prevent the heat entering or leaving the tent. Camp is located lets say only 45min – 1 hour walk from the Abuerge, so if you are not into spending night under the tent, you can easily go back to the hotel.

Whenever you go on trips like this, do not forget to bring your light because there is no electricity around. Walking out at night in desert is a beautiful experience, lots of stars and maybe some light from the moon, but you should have your light for a better chance to find the restroom…

They do have restroom that is more of the westerner standard, with two toilets and some water buckets that you should use to flush. That is the only permanent thing that is built there and it has solid concrete base.

So, the tour starts in the afternoon and you arrive to the camp for the sunset. Run up the dunes for the better view and enjoy it! In the evening, the guides are making the dinner. It was probably the worst tajine that I tried in Morocco, dry and a bit tasteless, but the boys tried their best… Do not think that this is REAL BEDUIN thing, because some of this boys are just Moroccans that are working in this town and are Beduin as much as you are.

After the dinner you are getting treated with some nice drumming and singing, and there are few drumming options for you to join :)

Dinning tent is the largest one in the camp and they have some gas lights that warm up the place a bit. Drumming also happens outside by the fire pit that they make in the evening and they set the carpets around the fire so that you can enjoy it better.

The beds and seating options are on the styrofoam blocks that are actually some kind of Chinese beds that this guys bought. As a beds, this are surprisingly comfy, or maybe I was too tired hehhehe

I must warn you to take extra blankets because night in the desert is COLD and you should not brave it…

In the early morning, guides are waking everyone up and people that were staying only one day are jumping on their camels and going back to enjoy sunrise on the way back to hotel. Rest of us stayed for another day and went to other places, like Old Merzouga.
