People say you have to dine here in Ubud. I say yeah why not?

Bebek Bengil is not very difficult to find as it is located by the road in town. It is a beautiful restaurant with a very nice ambience. During the day, you get to see the paddy field right behind the restaurant. So behold the beauty of the scenic green field as you enjoy your tasty dirty duck. And during some time of the year, you may even get to see the entire field turn golden brown! Nothing can stop you from walking down to the paddy field. There's no signage saying you can't do that. After all, there is no any form of barrier separating the restaurant from the field. Yeah go take a dip into the mud! eeewwwwwww

As night falls, the restaurant becomes dark as it only depends on lamps and downlights to brighten up. The scarce lighting brings about warmth and coziness and creates a very pleasant atmosphere for a nice and quiet dinner. If you listen carefully, you not only hear the sound of water from the water fountains. You can actually hear the crickets too.

At the look of the restaurant, you can tell that the landscape was designed with an artistic and garden feel. Go for a tour around the place and you'll come to little ponds with water lilies, various stone statues, tall big fern, palm and frangipani trees. Oh wait. There are also some areas in the open which were turned into private paddy gardens. Cool!

The dining tables are set out in different ways. In the open but under a garden umbrella, an area with a high roof, in a hut or in a pavillion. I got a hut when I was there. They are not put close to one another to allow some privacy among the guests. So if you're discussing about illegally extending your stay in Bali without getting caught, don't worry about people finding out!

Now the food. The specialty here is its duck dish. The duck meat is crispy, very hard and very dry. It tends to stick to the bones very much! And dirty?? Nope, 'dirty' is just how they call it. And the duck comes in golden yellow. The ducks are small in size and have very little meat, almost looking malnourished! The dishes actually tasted pretty good. Yay!

As for the price, I cannot really recall. I dined here in Year 2009.

I had a good time dining at Bebek Bengil. It's a place like no other.

A Must-Try Eating Place Jan 16, 2008
Great food and great place. Though it offers a wide variety of menu, the crispy duck is its specialty. It's so crispy that you can eat the bones. It's served with delicious red onion pickles and chilly sauce. The restaurant has its own rice field inside. Book in advance for the best spot in one of the huts by the rice felds. And don't forget to try the excellent coconut cream pie as dessert.

a good restaurant with a very nice view Dec 14, 2008
the food of this restaurant was not very special but good. it is best if you want the best places in the restaurant, or actually in the rice fields behind the restaurant, to make reservations. it is worth having diner.

our driver in Indonesia told me a funny story about this restaurant that made me want to go here. he said the reason this restaurant was called "Bebek Bengil" which means "Dirty Duck" it that because it took a long time to build it. then, when it was finally finished, a couple of days before it opened, a group of ducks that had been eating from the rice field around it walked straight through the restaurant making a total mess of the white interior. then the owner changed the original name to "Dirty Duck".
