Beautiful free and affordable places to visit and camp in Western USA Oct 07, 2014
I have visited exotic locations at the Grand Canyon, AZ both top and bottom of this great canyon. Both are at the end of a long dirt road that few people visit or know about. The top trail in the north is at Toroweap 8 miles west of Fredonia then 61 miles of dirt road with no services. The last mile is on rock and takes an hour to drive. (bumpy) No price to visit or camp in campground.

The bottom is by way of an indian reservation (permit required) at the south on US 66 at Peach Springs, AZ where you buy the permit. The first 20 miles of dirt road is graded and easy through Peach Spring Canyon. Then you reach Diamond creek and you are only 2 miles from bottom of Grand Canyon, but you have to drive the rest through the water of Diamond Creek. Watch out not to hit the few big underwater rocks that could puncture your oil pan cuz then you be walking. After the nervious 2 miles in water you are there. The indians are very friendly but a bit roughty. They will check you once for your permit.

Next is Oak Creek Canyon by Sedona, AZ. Take Schnebly Hill Road where decades ago they filmed old cowboy and indian movies. Its a bumpy dirt road starting through nice red rock formations. Then continue through white rock formations, then 30 feet thick of basalt. Then you get to a great overlook. Sorry, after many wonderful camps there the road is now closed to camping. At the overlook you can turn around and return to Sedona or keep going through a ponderosa pine forest and make it to the interstate and go to Flagstaff (and Grand Canyon) or go to Phoenix.

The next unrelated photos are St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The beach is Megans Bay...rated as one of the top beaches in the world. The open water is St Thomas, on the way to St. Johns. Lucky I got the shot with the sailboat.
