Bearsden & Milngavie Highland Games Reviews
Holding On To Traditions Jun 12, 2010
All through summer in Scotland you will find Highland games taking place almost every weekend. People that are right into it could probably spend the whole summer going to different ones every weekend.
Even in our own little backwater we have one that takes place on the second weekend of June, though it is never going to rival Braemar :D.
All the fun of the fair, with travelling shows and stalls all set up. There are a series of competitions of traditional events.
This year the Chieftan of the games was former Celtic footballer Murdo McLeod, who was born and brought up in Milngavie. Chieftans of the local games usually come from the Z list celebs, but have in the past included the three times Grand National winning racehorse Red Rum :O
As well as the traditional events a lot of local clubs and charities get time and space to promote their works.
Among the more traditional competions are the 'Strongman' that includes shot putting, tossing the caber, hammer throwing and weight hurling. A more fun version of haggis hurling gets more crowd participation though.
There is of course a Pipe Band competition, and an offshoot for the best Drum Major, the guy with the mace that leads the band. Scottish Country Dancing also features heavily.
Amongst the demonstrations from local clubs this year was the Shoto Budo martial arts, the Celtic Wrestling club, Extreme BMX cycling and even the local dog owners showing off what their pooches could do.
All in all a good day out, and for anyone visiting Scotland well worth going to, as I'll admit it's been years since I went, but I'm used to it having grown up with it.
I really enjoyed it, especially after I found the beer tent ;), and they had live bands in there doing a 'Gig At The Games' .
