Beacon Drive In Victoria Reviews
Best soft Ice cream Aug 16, 2011
Beacon Drive In was founded and built in 1958 by Bill Pistol and Bob McMillan, it has become known as a Victoria institution for it's soft-serve ice cream, friendly service, and local clientele. Located at 126 Douglas street, Beacon Drive In is directly across from beacon Hill Park, which does not allow food to be sold within the park grounds-----making the fast-food restaurant a destination from picnickers, park goers, Dallas Road walkers, well just about anyone. The most popular item on the menu is the ice cream, which comes in a variety of dips and flavors.
Part of Beacon Drive In's appeal stems from the fact that it has been is business now for more than 50 years with very few changes. Even the menu is largely unchanged. With current co-owner Peter Loubardeas, boasting that "our top 10 items have been the same for the last 40 years". Loubardeas, along with his father Gus, bought the restaurant in 2005 from Jim Douglas who ran it for more than 42 years.
The restaurant has two mottos "the customer always comes first" and "We don't change".
Beacon Drive In's mascot and logo is Beacon Bill....a seagull dressed in rain gear carrying a life preserver. Beacon Bill was conceived and illustrated by local Victoria artist Bill Hitchcox in 1978. Hmmmmmmm why rain gear :):) hahahaha It never rains here does it :) hahahah
Okay enough of the history.
Since I have now moved into town...I really had to try this place. I had only been there once before...but I walk by it every day I go to or from work.
Sooooo I decided to stop in and try the vanilla ice cream.
Yuuuummmmmmm it is delicious...I like it better than DQ.
I didn't see any sugar free ice cream on the list.. So to my friend Vance..No you can't have it :) Well not unless your going to run more than that ultra marathon :) then maybe....
I like the atmosphere...it looks like something from route 66...still has that nice old drive-in feel.
It always has a line up when I go by..always. Well at least for this time of year.
I haven't lived here in the winter...and the rain...but I know they are open...probably serving burgers and fries.
I can walk to it, have an ice cream cone...walk home because I may need to wear off the calories I just ate.
So come on with me have a great old fashioned soft ice cream cone...
Have some burger and fires if you like...just come along.
