Go to the beach! OK, I am showing off slightly by using the Spanish phrase when I know about ten words of that language but undoubtedly, a lot of the popularity of the town as a travel destination was built upon the beaches which are still popular with day trippers and longer term visitors.

Actually, the whole coast here is full of bays, which were home to smugglers for many centuries. Broadstairs is in a location surrounded by seven bays, of which the most central and famous is Viking Bay, apparently so named because the Vikings landed there in 1949! What happened was that a replica longboat, rowed across the North Sea landed there (I am unsure of the historical provenance of this) but it makes for a wonderfully romantic name, I think. Until that time it had been known rather more prosaically as "Main Bay".

The beach, in summer, has traditional kids entertainment like Punch and Judy, despite the pathetic attempts of the Guardian reading Islington set to have it banned a few years back and also trampolines, a bouncy castle and other attractions. As popular beaches go, it's very clean, as are they all, with several having the coveted blue flag designation. As an "insiders" tip, try Botany Bay (no, not the one in Australia) which is an absolute gem.

An easy walk in either direction, towards Margate or Ramsgate yields some wonderful little beaches, many of them still relatively quiet even on a sunny summer weekend, it really is an area well worth exploring. Four times a year in summer there is also an excellent fireworks display in Viking Bay which attracts fairly large crowds.

Come on, if you are at the seaside you have to go to the beach. Get some sand between your toes!
