In the middle of two mountain ranges in the southern South Africa, you'll find an area called Baviaanskloofberge, it's afrikaans and basically mean "Valley of the Baboons". It's practically in the middle of nowhere. You won't meet a lot of people, and if your car runs out of gas you'll most likely have to stay there for a while.

We would never know about this place if it wasn't for a local guy we met a few days before we actually went here. He also said it was a great place to see cave paintings.

It's a bumpy road all the way, so a 4WD is most likely the best way to go. We didn't have one, but went anyway. To see the san art, a guide will drive you even further into "nowhere" and then it's time for some climbing on giant rocks. (Beware of snakes. I was.. and held my breath while I was hiking and climbing, not the best combination.. I almost fainted. So remember, breathe, but keep your eyes open!)

It might be extreamly hot out there, so bring sunscreen and a lot of water. The climb up the rocks is a bit brutal, but when you finally get to the cave it'll be so worth it. Sitting up there watching ancient cave paintings from more than 5000 years ago.. it's amazing.

A good place to stay over for a couple of nights is San Stop. The evenings are absolutely breathtaking with the millions and billions of stars right above you. If you look closely you'll even see satelites pass by. Memorable experience!
