Battleship TEXAS La Porte Reviews
An educational and fun attraction just outside the city Jul 21, 2013
The USS Texas is the only remaining US ship to have fought in both World War I and II. Commissioned in 1914, it was the most powerful weapon in the sea at the time. Make the half-hour drive east of Houston to La Porte to awe at the size of this ship, climb aboard, and relive its grand history on the several deck levels that you have access to as a visitor.
You get to see the firepower the battleship had with its guns, cannons, and torpedoes. You go up and down ladders and through hatches to see different parts of the ship - main deck, bridge, engine rooms, radio room, galley, and crew quarters. There are even hard hat tours to see parts of the ship that aren't open to the general public. You will need to check the website to see when those special tours are offered. They are more expensive, but still affordable.
Battleship Texas is worth a visit. That's especially true if you're into history or have kids that like to climb around. They will go wild climbing up and down ladders and sitting in one of the big gun turrets and targeting the gun. I would budget a couple of hours on the ship itself.
- The Battleship Texas is not in Houston city limits and public transportation does not take you out there.
- The San Jacinto Monument and Museum is across the road, so that should be part of one visit.
- There is a nice park here where you can picnic before or after your tour.
- If you plan on climbing up and down ladders and walking to all different parts of the ship, which you should, wear comfortable shoes. If visiting during the summer, know that it can get pretty warm inside.
