Batalha Overview

D. Fernando I, died without a son, leaving only one daughter married to the king of Castilla, who claimed the throne of Portugal. The Portuguese nobles opposed and settled a serious crisis, with war between the two peoples.
In August 14, 1385, 6500 Portuguese and English faced 31.000 Spanish and French in a battle close to Aljubarrota, ended with a total defeat of the Spanish, and the crisis definitively solved with the nomination of João de Avis as the future king. To celebrate the victory, king João I, ordered the construction of a monastery, that is one of the marvels of the Portuguese Gothic.
A village grew around the monastery, giving place to an industrial small city, but the monastery remains as the central attraction, one of the highlights of Portuguese architecture.
