The city of Bastogne is full of rich culture and history. The inhabitants are extremely American friendly to the point where they re-enact battles during WWII dressed as Americans and driving in old jeeps and tanks. There are many great places to eat and drink. Any history buff will need to make Bastogne a mandatory stop in any European tour.
As a matter of fact, the city was the scene of a major battle in December 1944 when the German Army laid seige on Bastogne. At that time the American forces defending the city was commanded by General McAuliffe. When the Germans sent an ultimatum note to surrender, McAuliffe replied with just one word, "Nuts" which became so famous that it has been depicted in many World War 2 films. A bust of the General can be seen in Bastogne's town square.
