Bastakiya - the old quarter Dubai Reviews
Historic walk Aug 01, 2012
Bastikiya quarter....you get to see some history (everything thing else around here is relatively new)
Bastikiya, a Persian trading port in Dubai.....one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai and the last wind tower quarter left on the Arab side of the Gulf. Bastakiya’s name is derived from the Iranian town of Bastak, from where many of Dubai’s first trading immigrants hailed in the early 19th century.
The creek close by must have one a many stories to tell as that is pretty much where everything started for Dubai.....all the trading - was the heart of the city.
The wind towers are truly amazing architecture as back in the olden days there was no air conditioning and these wind towers or tunnels provided better ventilation and temperature than the modern day equipment.
For generations, wind towers were the answer. They came into use sometime after 1850. Often, the towers were wrapped in wet fabric, to increase their cooling power. Usually positioned on one corner of a house, they were made of stone, mud brick or gypsum plaster, and stood around three to five metres above the roof, with vents facing in the direction of the sea, to catch the cooler air. Just like an open window, the tower catches the air, which then filters down into the living area below, creating a cool air stream.
Wandering around Bastakiya, it’s easy to transport yourself back to a bygone era. These old buildings have been converted into shady cafés, art galleries and quirky little shops – making Bastakiya the perfect place to while away a few hours. Try Basta Art Cafe for something to drink - they serve very nice fresh juices Majlis Gallery and XVA for some art….. you can also get lucky in the spice shop there
Worth venturing there once during the day and again in the evening - you feel you have gone to a new place.
The Dubai souk is very close so maybe an idea to do that in between and come back to feel the old soul of Dubai……..
