Nice church with a wonderfull view Apr 03, 2013
On the hill Monmartre in Paris lies the 'Basilique du Sacre-Coeur'. To reach this basilique you have to climb on the hills by a lot of stairs. But you will be rewarded with a wonderfull view over Paris from this basilique.

The stairs in front of the basilique is really a trouristic attraction. Besides there are a lot of tourist at the stairs, the local people try to sell some souvenirs or get some money for trucs.

It is also possible to visit the basilique. Inside the building you can see how big this basilique really is. The building has been decorated in a nice way.

Another option is to reach the top of the basiique. For a small entrance fee you can go to the top by stairs. From the top of the basilique the view over Paris is even more impessive!

Sketchy but great Mar 09, 2011
I stayed near the Sacre Coeur in Paris and so had to make a walking trip up there. It's quite close to the Anvers metro station and sits at what I heard was the highest point in Paris. I was advised to climb to the top of the basilica to get the best view of Paris because it's cheaper (5 euros I think) and less crowded than the Eiffel Tower; also, the Eiffel Tower was only open to the halfway point when I was there.

First off, I really loved the basilica. It just gets more and more beautiful as you walk up the many stairs leading to the entrance. It's free to go inside the cathedral, and only a few euros to walk up the stairs (which are very small and somewhat claustrophobic, but very cool!). I was so glad that I went to the top -- you can see a 360 degree view of Paris, and you can even hear the locals playing music at the bottom in front of the church! It was great to get away from the crowds of Paris. From there I also spied a neat square where artists were selling paintings and drawing portraits, etc. It was a great experience.

The only trouble I had was the people harassing me at almost every corner. They demand your arm and then start to make a bracelet around your wrist, and then charge you 20 euros for the experience. I didn't fall into the trap because I heard about it before going, but it was really hard to avoid them; there are 50 scammers wandering the lower staircase. This took away from the overall trip, but I liked being at the top of the basilica anyway.

watching the sunset sitting at the steps of the Sacre Coeur is something which is actually a must. you've got to take some snacks and wine/beer and enjoy people playing music, singing and dancing. It's just great and for free!!!

The big white church on the hill! Jul 02, 2004
The Sacre-Coeur seems to be one of the better secrets that is not a secret. Because of it's location on Montmarte, most people either skip this sight because it's too hard or out of the way...or they stop by long enough to see the church then disappear. For a very small fee, you can walk to the top of the basilica where you have a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city. You can't get a better view, even from the Eifel Tower! And to top it off you get Montmarte and the steps back down to the Pigalle area when you're done. Take the time to stop by and be sure to go to the top!
