The biggest church in the Middle East! Nov 17, 2016
So for one thing, don't expect a church half in ruins and shambles, archaeological remains of something, etc. etc. This is quite a modern church. In fact, had it not been in the holy city of Nazareth, it looks like any other modern day church.

There are 2 striking things in the compound: a series of portraits of the Mother and child from around the world culturally customised (for example, the Japanese version has Mary dressed in a kimono). And second, the brass door that contains carvings depicting various parts of Jesus' life.

Inside, there are 2 floors - the top floor contains a lot of abstract religious art. And the basement, a grotto is the sanctum sanctorum with a prayer area. This is the place where God told Mary that she would be the mother to the holy child.

At the top of the cupola of the church is a lantern, which symbolises light to the world.

I was overall impressed, except for our guide who kept raving on about all his degrees, how he gave up an IT job and how his manager begged him to stay, blah blah. As usual, ruined another wonderful day trip (typical of tour guides in this country it looks like).

This church is right next to Church of St.Joseph, and is a stop for all tour groups.

Great place and great pictures! Unfortunately, your experience also shows that some places are really better visited without a guide at all.
