Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Dec 23, 2013
The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in Piazza Duomo, near Piazza Vecchia, in the centre of the Upper city, is a church built in the first half of 1100 in order to ask Mary to protect Bergamo from the plague. In 1300 Giovanni da Campione added the Gothic porticoes. Since 1449 it has been managed by the Congregation of Mercy on behalf of the city, which has patronage over the structure. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes, stucco works and large tapestries, someone also 6 meter long. In the presbytery there is a wooden choir designed by Lorenzo Lotto. Musical masters such as Simone Mayr, Donizetti's tutor (both buried in the Basilica), have directed the old chapel.
