Basilica of Saint Servatius Feb 11, 2015
The Saint Servatius Basilica (Basiliek van Sint-Servaas in Dutch) is located in Maastricht between 3 big squares. Het vrijthof, Keizer Karelplein and Hendric van Veldekeplein. It’s been said that the Basilica is build on the grave of Saint Servatius and dates back to the year 1000, it was build in 3 fases. Though the first church build on the grave of Saint Servatius was build between 675 and 1000. It got too small for all the pilgrims visiting which made it necessary to build a bigger Basilica.

The treasury holds a lot of pretty treasures as well as duplicates. They have been doing some excavations and it is possible to visit those using a spiral staircase.

The Basilica is build in Romanesque style using coal sandstone and Marl also holds the grave of Saint Servatius.

The Basilica has a treasury and belongs to the richest of Europe. It is possible to visit. You do however have to pay an entry fee of €4.50.

The Basilica has been restored a lot of times between 1870 and 1993. The Basilica is located on the UNSECO world heritage list. And in my opinion definitely worth a visit.

I can write a long list of dates and names and a lot of difficult words about the techniques used to build the Basilica that definitely need googletranslation. But I won’t. I got some pictures that will show you some of the beauty inside but visiting will really give you a feel for the place. Pretty, old and a place of calm and peace.
