Basilica of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupre Quebec City Reviews
Beautiful Basilica Aug 02, 2010
Construction started on the church in 1658, which was initially a shrine to honour Saint Anne. Because it was so popular, it was enlarged several times- once around 1661, again around 1676. Then, in 1876 Saint Anne was proclaimed the patron saint of Quebec, so it was enlarged again and the first basilica was opened.
In March 1922, a fire destroyed the first basilica, so construction on a new basilica began in 1923, which is the present basilica open to worshipers and the public. It is beautiful and big, full of mosaics, sculptures and stained glass. It is free to visit, and pictures are allowed.
