Nice tiles! Apr 10, 2011
Constructed in the early half of the sixth century under the command of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, this basilica is a fine example of the artistic and architectural might of the era. The nave of the church is perhaps the best thing about it - dotted with fine mosques that show Christ surrounded by four angels, then by saints and prophets (sixteen males on one side of the nave with Christ, and sixteen females on the other side). The whole effect is just amazing and is like some religious entourage! There is some pecking order with the saints, and many of them have rather identical expressions despite being given their various names. The church itself is gutted empty, there is very little inside apart from the mosaics. If you understand Italian, you might be lucky enough to pick up the finer descriptions from one of the many tour groups that frequent this place (rather cheeky, but there you have it!). Otherwise there’s a gift shop nearby which sells many books, postcards and memorabilia.
