Fresco glimpse Apr 01, 2011
Constructed in the twelfth century, this basilica is tucked away in Trieste, a few minutes away from teatro romano. From the outside, this looks like a very plain building that doesn’t have much interest at all. The graffiti outside and the general uncared for look gave me the impression that seldom visitors or worshippers pass by the door. And yet inside, it’s a nice enough visit that’s worth a few minutes. The whole of the inside can be neatly seen as you enter. Considering the age, I thought the modern church seats were lacking authenticity even if they were more comfortable. There are no chapels or an exciting altar here. The basilica’s only key feature can be seen through the traces of frescoes that still linger on the effectively-bare walls. After seeing them, it was quite sad to imagine how beautiful this place must have been back in the day, and how it has really stood the test of time. If this sort of appreciation appeals to you, take the time to make a quick visit here!
