Extraordinary art Apr 26, 2011
Serving as a church and abbey, this is one of Perugia’s most impressive religious sites. Like the famous San Pietro in Rome, this San Pietro has its fair share of great art. The monastery was here since the tenth century, and the site has been continually tweaked and embellished for a few centuries thereafter. Most of the key art seems to come from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The walls are studded with great art and carvings, and pride of place are the two canvases that were painted by Vasari. There is just so much to see here that it’s almost like an Aladdin’s cave; I can imagine visiting this place again and again and still picking up new features and sights. This was a stunning visit in Perugia and I highly recommend the place above all of the other churches in the city.
