Great tomb! Apr 11, 2011
The basilica itself is actually rather plain and there isn’t much to see really. The chapels are nice enough and underneath the main altar, the section of the building appears to be prone to flooding. The church has ingeniously made a feature of this, as the water contains some well-raised fish! Exit the church and turn right though, and you’ll find that it leads you to the tomb of Dante. He was an impressive literary figure and perhaps even a great ambassador for the national language, a bit like Chaucer is in England. As he passed away here, an elaborate tomb was composed here. It’s usually awash with tourist groups, but it’s nicely supervised so that tourists can get a decent look in! It’s worth visiting for the tomb alone.
