Key church of Perugia Apr 26, 2011
Serving as Perugia’s largest church, and in Umbria as well, this basilica was constructed in the sixteenth century in a Baroque style with some gothic influence. The frescoes are wonderfully done and are reminiscent of the ones painted by Giotto in the medieval period. Likewise, some of the frescoes are similar to the ones found in the gothic section of St Francis’s basilica in Assisi. The stained glass windows were quite a feature and as Pope Benedict XI died in Perugia in the fourteenth century, an elaborate funerary monument can be seen to commemorate the event. The rest of the walls are quite threadbare though. Overall, if you are in Umbria, this should be the key church to visit.
