Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa
Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa Reviews
A bit of a modern twist on an ancient colonial establishment! Dec 04, 2013
This is regarded as Peru's largest Cathedral and the first picture you'll find when you search on the Internet for Arequipa. It's big, and occupies one entire side of the Plaza de Armas and is gated by a compound with huge black fences.
Adjoining this is a museum which is a paid entrance, and when the Cathedral is closed to the public (usually 11a-5p), one can visit the Cathedral via a guided tour through the museum. I wouldn't recommend that as the tour hasn't received rave reviews, and they essentially take you through the Cathedral that you can see for free if you hold on for a few more hours when it reopens.
So the Cathedral itself - it's quite modern! it's got very contemporary yellow ceilings and walls, and huge modern statues of various religious figures. I would take a guess that it's been heavily restored in the last few decades. The Cathedral is a tourist attraction which means you're bound to here more clicks of a camera than an evensong!
Spend about 30 minutes here...not more. Overall, it's a nice place but don't lose your sleep if you can't visit it!
