Basil Thai Restaurant Charlotte Reviews
Thai food with an edge Aug 19, 2011
Basil Thai restaurant, located in Charlotte, NC downtown presents Thai cuisine, served elegantly in a fine dining setting. The restaurant sits at the junction corner, and has seating available outside when the weather is pleasant.
We went to have our dinner quite early, so there weren't a lot of customers. The interiors look plush and pleasant, albeit a tad dark because of dim lighting and dark leather upholstery on their seats. The staff too wears a completely black attire, which doesn't really help :)
We started with a stuffed shrimp appetizer - worth every buck! Had Basil not been so timely with their entrée service, we would've ordered another one of those. The sweet-n-sour sauce complemented the shrimp quite nicely. The drink menu for Basil covers all, from wines, beer to saké. One of my friends hadn't tried Saké ever, so we ordered a bottle of Jasmine-scented, which turned out to be very appetizing! Our waitress was polite and helpful, although she was completely lost when it came to drinks. The funny thing was - she was also tending to the bar.
The portion size of the entrées is huge! We could not finish two entrées between three people, and had to box one of them. I felt the restaurant tries very hard to be a fine-dine thai place, but the food somehow loses it's innate 'thai'ness in the process. It was decent nevertheless, but has the potential to be awesome if they drop the fancy fou-fou around it.
All in all, the evening at Basil turned out to be a good affair. Recommendation - affirmative! :)
