This used to be the best school in the country Feb 02, 2017
I went to a good school as a teenager and i believe i was there when they celebrated their 400th anniversary but this school in the center of Yangon was very impressive with the large red brick colonial building in Botatung Township. It is located in Anarawtha Road on the other side of the Secretariat. The school is U-shaped 3 story red brick colonial building with some of the finest facilities in the country, including 10 classrooms in both the east and west wings, a regulation size football pitch, a practice pitch, two annex halls, a courtyard, volleyball court, 2 tennis courts, a physics and chemistry laboratory. The school was originally called St. Paul's English High School and was founded in 1860 by the De La Salle brothers, a Roman Catholic Order. Back then it was an all boys school and educated the children of British Officers, the Burmese rich, Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese. The language used was English except for a few classes in the later years of the students. Latin, science and maths were taught as well as some special classes in painting and woodwork, but the highlight of the year was the annual sports events and concert days. The school adopted its present name by the military government in 1965 and all lessons were carried out in Burmese. Because of the government policies of making children attend local schools B.E.H.S. has lost its significance and the school attracts middle class families from downtown Yangon.

The school operates two shifts with classes of 40-50 students, much lower than a normal school where classes of 70 pupils is more or less the norm.
