Base sous-marine de Bordeaux Reviews
out the beaten path,a WWII impressive building Dec 26, 2008
The Submarine Base(la base sous-marine)is one few in Europe that still remains from the WWII.
After a first meet-up in July 1943,the German and Italian Headquarters(France had been occupied since 1940),decide to build a mutual submarine base
to protect 13 submarines. The construction began in April 1941 till 1943,the base was called Betasom(som for sommergibili, submarine in Italian) and
required 600 000 m3 of concrete.
The U.Bunker is an enormous building 235 m long,162 wide,the roof's thickness is about 7 m.
This hangar is now a cultural, tourism and leisure centre with permanent exhibitions about the Base and boats and a place for theater, dance shows,concerts...
