A basic "home base" in central Brisbane Dec 04, 2012
The Base embassy is conveniently located in the CBD of Brisbane, only three blocks down from central station and around the corner from Queen Street Mall pedestrian shopping area. It's a pleasant looking historical building.

Upon entering you need to go up a small flight of stairs to reach reception. We were warmly welcomed by the receptionist and checked-in, but at eight thirty, our room obviously wasn't ready yet. We were told it'd be available as from two pm, but we could leave our stuff in the luggage room and freshen up in the bathroom on the second floor. That communal bathroom had a toilet and a walk in shower that was basic but spic and span.

At two pm we got the key to room 204, a double on the second floor. The room is located right across from the communal kitchen and features a small double bed (queen size) an iron board with iron, a chair and two bedside tables. Though the bedside tables were placed against the side wall, not next to the bed.

The bathroom was really spacious with again a large walk in shower, with curtain. A wash basin, a hairdryer ( I was amazed to find a hairdryer standard in a hostel room) and a toilet.... Though the toilet was running and had a large paper on it saying it was out of order and to please use the toilet down the hall. That was quite a bummer. What's the point in having an en-suite bathroom when the toilet is out of order?

We had asked for twin beds but these were unavailable. Sleeping in this double bed was really uncomfortable. I hardly dared to move. A queen bed is ok for a couple but not to share with a friend.

Our room being right across from the kitchen, didn't allow us to sleep in peace. Pretty much the whole night through there was noise of voices, pots and pans and a smell of all sorts of dishes being cooked. Closer to morning, the noise got much worse. Even earplugs didn't help much, but I was so tired that it didn't really matter.

The hostel features vending machines, a TV room, a luggage room and the kitchen looked pretty equipped, but I only quickly peaked in, so I cannot say for sure.

Even though the common bathroom was clean in the morning, it was downright filthy by night time. The previous occupant didn't care to flush the toilet, had showered and set the floor under water and shaved legs or armpits in the washbasin without even bothering to clean up the hair. This is really gross and very disrespectful towards the hostel cleaning staff.

The most positive point about the hostel is the friendliness of the staff at reception. The guy who welcomed us was really considerate and gave us some good pointers where to go. In the afternoon we were met by a girl from Belgium behind reception. She was really nice too and chatted a bit about her time in Australia so far.

A few practical things still. One needs to pay a 20 dollar key deposit, which is given back upon check-out. People in dorms need to take the pillow case down upon check-out too, so that they can see which beds are vacant.

Since this is my first hostel experience, I have nothing to compare with. I found the Base Embassy to be very basic, but that was to be expected. The public areas were all spic and span at some point but are greatly affected by how other people use them. So people please be considerate of who comes after you.

Base is Big & Busy! Nov 27, 2011
I stayed here for a couple nights in an 8 bed dorm and then in a private room. Its a good location for the city in Brisbane. The lift is quite old and the tv room is small... The kitchen is fine but ive seen better! The beds are good in the dorms. The private room is below average as our room was tiny. Staff are friendly but very busy while i was there. Down Under Bar is below the hostel which offers good value for backpackers on meals and drinks. Not the best hostel for meeting people though.. but i think everyones experience will be different. Overall its a good location and for brissie prices probably the best if you are on a budget !

Nice and funky hostel in the city center - X base Sep 29, 2010
It was about 7pm when we arrived to the hostel and I really liked the fact the reception works 24hrs.

This hostel is very well located, just a few blocks away from Queen St. It's a big old building that has been restored and looks cool.

They have big dorms which are large and the furniture is ok. Beds are comfy and like the fact you have to use your key to access to the bathrooms too, giving extra security.

Service is great. Staff was very helpful

One of the things I like the most was the old elevator, so cool and retro!

There's also a fun bar at the basement, which always offers special deals for the guests
