A navigable aqueduct which carries the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal. The aqueduct swing bridge open for larger vessels cruising on the ship canal to pass underneath and also for narrow boats to cross over the top.

Designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and built by Company of Derby, the swing bridge opened in 1894 and still in use over 200 years later. The World's only swing aqueduct is listed and considered a celebration of Victorian civil engineering. The swing bridge replaced an earlier aqueduct, built in 1761, because of the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal.

I wasn't able to walk across the aqueduct instead I walked across the nearby Barton Swing Bridge and eventually rejoined the canal. Further information about Barton Swing Aqueduct can be found on the website.
