Great hiking oasis in urban Austin Mar 05, 2011
The Barton Creek greenbelt is a great place for hiking and other outdoor activities in Austin. The Greenbelt trail starts in Zilker Park and stretches for 7+ miles up the normally dry Barton Creek. There are several access points for the trails along its length. When the creek is running there are several swimming holes at Twin Falls and other places. The main trail is marked with mileage markers but several side trails wind up both sides of the creek. Along the trail are sheer limestone cliffs which are popular for rock climbing. The trails are also popular with mountain bikers.
