Barry's of Douglas Reviews
May 24, 2007
Barry's of Douglas could be considered my local, but since it's renovation a few years ago, it has become more of a "super" pub, with its giant size and beautiful interior design making it an attractive haunt for many. The crowd in Barry's is very much mixed, and you'll find people of all ages in there, with no particular group dominating.
The decoration is very nice, and it is a comfortable place to enjoy a night with friends. It tends to be very busy on a Friday and Saturday night, and getting a table can be nearly impossible when busy, but that's not a problem as you won't meet anyone by sitting down!
The drink in Barry's is decent, I've yet to have a bad pint there. It is a tad more expensive than other pubs in Douglas, but the premium is probably an attempt to keep the thugs out! There is no real dress code, jeans and a polo shirt are usually fine, but don't wear white runners. If you look under 23 you may be asked for ID to prove you're over 18 so be sure to bring some.
For the smokers among you there is a covered smoking area available. There is also a restaurnt in Barry's, which closes early enough on weekends to make extra space for drinkers in the bar! I haven't eaten there so can't advise on what the food is like, but I have heard that it's good!
At the end of the night there should be no problem getting a taxi, as they are always lined up outside the door. So whether you're heading into town for a club or heading home to prepare for your hangover, you shouldn't be stuck for a spin. A taxi to town should cost in the region of 10 Euro from Barry's.
Overall, it's a nice pub to be in and the atmosphere is good. The people in there are nice and there are usually a lot of staff, so you shouldn't be waiting too long to get served.
