Barrio Cafe Phoenix Reviews
Oct 03, 2006
With accolades such as Best Mexican Restaurant 2005, Best of the Valley 2005, Best of the Southwest,Fodor's, and Zagat'stop RestaurantGuide, the Barrio Cafe is a hidden jewel in one the manybarrios of Phoenix.
Open since 2002, when I first visited the place, I was struck by the uniqueness and flavors of the foods. Southern Mexican cuisine, strongly influenced by mole, oaxacan cheese, and combinations of flavors ranging from roquefort cheese, to garlic and tequila lobster, tamarind glazed duck breast, and mayan style slow roasted pork.
No chimichangas and burritos here, but a variety of interestingsandwhiches such as the Tortas, seen below.
It's a cozy little space, with limited seating, but there is always some room at the bar for a great margarita, and the restaurant itself isa revolving art exhibit of local talents.
This is where you take those friends and family members that are visiting from out of town.
