Barr Camp/Trail Manitou Springs Reviews
Barr camp/trail adventure Jul 02, 2009
Me and my girlfriend took full gear up this mountain to the camp and then left out equipment there to tackle the summit of Pikes Peak then back down again. Tent, sleeping bags, water purifier tablets, single propane grill etc. If you are a good hiker you can do this 26 mile hike in one day without all that, we witnessed several people do this that just zoomed passed us. Barr Camp lies 6 miles from the peak and 7 miles from the bottom. NO road will take you there. You can start from the top at 14,110 ft and work down to about 6,000 or start from the bottom. At the camp you can rent tent space for 12 dollars or camp outside for free. If you pay the fee you can get free breakfast and hot drinks. The drinks are free all day! They also have lean-to shelters for 17$ and cabin space that run a bit more.
Neal and Teresa live in the cabin, Henry David Thoreau style. They are great people that will help you out any they can. They run an non-profit org. out of the cabin that helps keep Barr trail and the camp well maintained.
No matter how you do this it is a great experience of the Rockies. I would not have done anything else out of Colorado Springs.
****If you plan on hiking this there and back bring plenty of water. Neal and his wife will purify the water at the camp but I drank a little from it and I'm fine. The last mile to the summit is harsh the air is thin so be careful and stay hydrated people!
This is a gorgeous hike and more then worth it, I spent 4 days on that mountain.
