on my way up to Highlands, New Jersey to stay with friends on my long road trip, i stopped here to check this light out and it was worth it. as well as all the lights in the USA this one was just as great to see. Old Barney as its called is the 2nd tallest lighthouse in the US, was commisioned in 1858, stands 165 feet above sea level. the lighthouse is really two towers n one, the exterior conical tower covers a cylindrical tower on the inside, thats pretty cool. it ramained a 1st class navigational light until August 1927 when the "Barnegat Lightship" was anchored 8 miles off the coast. the towers light was reduced by 80%, but it was not extinguished until jan 1944. the lightship was removed in 165, made obsolete by electronic navigation
