Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale ,County Durham ,England. It is on the north bank of the river Tees, and 21 miles from the city of Durham. The Bowes museum is in Barnard Castle. The population is 5495 [2011 ]. A great place if you like quality antique shops.----The town castle was built around 1125 AD ,it is high above the river Tees. Today it is cared for by English Heritage. The castle is in town behind the Methodist Church in Galgate.--- The Butter Cross or Market Cross was built in 1747, is at a busy road junction , so you cant miss it.----- Charles Dickens and his illustrator Habbott Browne stayed in Barnard Castle while researching for his novel Nicholas Nicklby in the winter of 1837/38.. He noticed a young boy who worked in a clock shop , and included him in his novel.----There is no train service to Barnard Castle, but a regular bus service by two companies run to Darlington and other places.--- There is a lovely Fish and Chip cafe in town.----Barnard Castle is the place to catch a mini bus to High Force Waterfall on Wednesday only.CHECK TIMES BEFORE TRAVEL,SERVICE DEPENDS ON COUNCIL GRANT.

I've never actually been there, there is so much of the North of England I have yet to visit.

Great piece of writing.

Barnard Castle Sep 24, 2017
I first visited Barnard Castle over 30 years ago. To relive some of my childhood memories I recently returned to the castle. I enjoyed looking around and appreciate more of its history.

The castle goes back to the 12th Century and founded by Bernard de Bailliol. The castle developed over the two centuries and subsequently passed to Richard III. The castle fell into ruins after the King's death in 1485. Anne Neville, daughter of Earl of Warwick, married (her second second after the death of her first husband, Edward (the Prince of Wales) Richard III who more of less governed north of England at the time.

I enjoyed looking round the castle and looking down to the River Tees from the site (and also up to the castle from the river bank).

Further information about the castle can be found on the website.
