Perfect place to catch a cold! Nov 25, 2012
We stayed at the Barka Basia in Krakow for one night at the beginning of October 2012 before travelling on to Oswiecim.

POSITIVES: As a boat moored on the banks of the Vistula, the location was different and interesting! The Barka is situated about a 25-minute walk (probably less without suitcase!) to the main market square in Krakow, and about 15 minutes or so from the heart of the Kazimierz district. The floating bar moored next door, the Augustus, boasted comfy wicker seats, live sports channels and a barman who served our drinks with all the style and flair you'd expect from a 5* hotel. The price to stay at the Barka Basia worked out at about £7.50 per person, so it's the perfect place to stay if you're on a budget.

NOT-SO-POSITIVES: The area isn't particularly well-lit, so after our taxi driver had dropped us off on the river bank we were left stumbling around in semi-darkness as neither the boat nor its actual boarding point were well-signposted. When we eventually found it the gangplank was gated across and the entire boat looked deserted, which was a little off-putting! We arrived at around 10pm and were taken through to the galley-cum-mess to complete the necessary paperwork, but when we asked if we could order drinks from the evidently well-stocked bar we were informed that they were closed (!). Our room was cold and there was no way of adjusting the temperature; the condensation on the inside of the window told its own story! The bed amounted to a thin mattress, a couple of extremely thin pillows and two single duvets, which we found slightly odd for a double room. From previous reviews we had been led to believe that the boat would be both warm and comfortable, but unfortunately we both wound up with rotten colds after staying!

While breakfast looked promising - meats, cheese, yogurt, marmalade and salad - it tasted unappealing and items that should have been cold (such as the cheese) were room-temperature. The toilets and showers were atrocious, with no separate facilities for men and women; there were no floor mats, no locks on the outer doors, only one sink and no areas to get dressed/undressed without fear of someone walking in mid-way through. The showers and toilets were in the same room and with the utter lack of privacy we wound up having to stand guard for each other and then scuttle into the toilet cubicles to get dressed again - an unpleasant experience as they smelt very strongly of stale urine and didn't appear particularly clean. While one door leading into the shower-cum-toilet room was apparently locked after 9.30pm (as the sign on the door declared), another door around the corner led directly in and was left open (?). The shower cubicles were tiny and rusting - but, interestingly enough, lockable! - and out of the two showers available, just one was working; it was really ineffective and I didn't feel much cleaner for using it.

Overall, this is an okay place to stay if, like us, you're on a budget and need somewhere to stop over for one night before travelling onwards. However, while this might be a better place to stay in the summer, I wouldn't recommend it.
