Bargaining
Bargaining Reviews
Mar 16, 2006Very important if you are a non-chinese person - bargain! if they see a white man asking them the price, they will not double it, but make it 5 times more. I'm not kidding! don't feel bad to start the bargain at real low prices, don't worry about them, they know what they are doing, and they will sell it only if it's profitable. I think that in the end you'll always pay more than chinese people, so don't feel bad. If you know a bit of chinese, talk to them in chinese, it will show them you are not green in the country. Also try and notice what other people (chinese) are paying. Beware of the tourist places, i.e. the silk market, where the starting price is more than 5 times more. And again, don't be afraid to start bargaining with a number which is close to nothing. Part of the Work in Beijing travel blog |

The last week or so in Beijing has been great. It hasn't been hard adjusting at all. After a few days of rainy weather, it has become a lot more stable and either it isn't as smoggy or it isn't bothering me as much. I am also getti…bargain a lot here to get what you want for an even halfway decent price. We have met so many people when bargaining (usually American-born Chinese) who tell us we are getting ripped off even when we think we are getting rock bottom… Wo ai China! |

Mandy, one of the women I met on the overnight train to Beijing, adopted me for the day on Tuesday and took me to a wholesale market where locals shop. (I got a whole manner of double-takes; it's definitely not advertised to foreigners and Man…bargaining. And hoo boy did we bargain. Mandy told me to be discreet, and not show too much interest in anything, and certainly not interact with any of the vendors myself. The foreigner markup is quite steep. (300%? 500%? It's up there… Bargaining with the Best of 'Em |

For a long time, I was an ANTI-CHINA person. I never considered China as a vacation destination.I do not appreciate people assume TAIWAN & CHINA ARE THE SAME COUNTRY! (Please correct your friends if they had this assumption!) If yo…BARGAINING IN CHINA . If you do not speak the language, then you will definitely get the special treatment by the locals. Beijing. The capital of China. A cold city, at least during winter/spring. We arrived here by train from Hong Kong. 24 hours on something that was pure luxury compared to the trains in India. We checked in at Wangfujing…bargain (and I mean really bargain), you'll pay way too much. They start the bidding really high. Not just twice the price it should be, but maybe even five or six times as much. I bought a t-shirt.. paying… Our first taste of China |
