Today was a day of travel, to say the least. Awaking at 4 am to see off my UofHawaii homegirls - they are off to other parts of Eastern Europe, I then packed up shop and put myself on a train to Vienna. Why Vienna? Simple, the only way to travel light is to ditch your gear. Our hotel in Vienna was kind enough to store my luggage while I travel around so I figured I´d stop in and drop off some more stuff for them. So that was Budapest to Vienna. From there,…

After an 11-hour bus ride from Santander
with a half an hour break to munch on teeny sandwiches of meat and cheese and
green popsicles that turned our mouths the same color, my sister and I finally
arrived in Barcelona.
Studying our map in order to find our hostel near Las Ramblas, our sore bums
screamed at us to walk, but our hostel was just too far away. So, swinging our
packs onto our backs, we made for the taxi queue and got in. Alysaa, being the
master at Spanish and me not knowin…

Together with my best friend, Marielle (Travbuddy Marielle1975) I went to Barcelona to shop. Ok...we didn't shop all the time because we bought too much...so we finally have seen some interesting places too. :)
After arriving Barcelona we've gone to our hotel to drop our luggage and immediately left again to go shopping! With a map of Barcelona in our hands we are walking and counting the streets so we will not lose...we're very good at getting lost in a strange city! It seems to be ve…

Barcelona defintely does not disappoint! My only regret about my trip to scenic Barcelona is that I only spent three nights there. I was traveling with a buddy and a married couple and we all had different agendas. We did manage, however, to find a nice balance between exploring the city and doing a little partying. I really enjoy looking at architecture - castles, cathedrals, and old churches are favorites. Barcelona is perfect for this.
I flew in to Barce…

It was crazy last night in Barcelona and it was my first night here! From all nights, there was a soccer championship game between Barcelona and Madrid. Barcelona won and Las Ramblas was filled with people celebrating. I'm sure other parts of Barcelona were celebrating as well but I could barely move through the crowd. It was crazy and chaotic; cheers, screams, chants, fireworks, people climbing on things... you name it! Gosh these people celebrate long and with …

It’s late summer in Barcelona and the Ramblas is full of tourists, each clutching a guide to Barcelona, it seems. One of the most famous thoroughfares in the world, this broad street which leads from central Barcelona down to the sea front is brimming with life plus the inevitable tourist schlock. Tourists at the cafes are drinking café con leche, huge steins of beer or cups of rich cioccolato con curros (hot chocolate with elongated doughnuts). But just a few hund…

After arriving to Barcelona on Tuesday, we were a little surprised to see Catalan instead of spanish on the map. We were looking for La Paza de Palau, but realized it was actually Placa de Palau. Supposedly not in a very good area, but the hotel was very nice (wish I could remember the name of it). It was a 4 star hotel (due to the remodeling). The location was very good. We were exactly in between Barceloneta beach and Las Ramblas. We hit th…

We went on a bus tour of some of Barcelona today. We saw the Olympic Village and the statue of Christopher Columbus. We went on a walking tour with Mikey, saw the cathedral of Barcelona, the Royal Square, and the Judical Square before strolling down La Rambla street. The street market was crazy; you could get all sorts of touristy stuff and knick-knacks but you could also buy animals on the street! You could get pidgens, chickens, taranculas, and all sorts of cra…

The catalan capital commemorates its escape from plague through the intercession of Our Lady Of Mercy, to whom terrified citizens turned for deliverance. All these centuries later the event is marked by a long weekend festival culminating in the Mercé anniversary on September 24th. This is a very distinctive event, it also marks the return of vibrance (and local inhabitants) to the city after the heat and visitor influx of July and August. There are childrens events and a whole street in Gar…

Sorry for the lack of an entry tonight. I am way too tired and it is way too late and my train leaves way to early in the morning for me to write it out now. I will have plenty of time to do that in the morning, and hopefully I can get it and tomorrows up tomorrow night at Owens (the CSer I am staying with in Carcassonne tomorrow).
Here are some photos as an aperitif. Seriously, when I get back to the states we are going to have aperitifs lol.
