Barcelo Edinburgh Carlton Hotel Reviews
Great location but restaurant disappoints Jun 11, 2013
The Carlton sits impressively on North Bridge amongst the shops, almost directly opposite the Scotsman. The modern glass entrance sits beneath a much older (and better looking) structure that dominates the street.
The reception area was clean and inviting, and the staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was nice, spacious and clean.
The location is great, a mere five - ten minutes walk to princes street and less than five minutes walk to the historic Royal Mile.
We made use of the spa facilities here, situated in the very bottom of the hotel. Here there is a small swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna as well as various spa treatments, including massage, facial, manicure and pedicure. Having booked in prior to arrival, we checked ourselves in and were given white fluffy towels and white slippers. As it was a Saturday, there were many other women also wandering about in white fluffy attire. We were given the option of picking two treatments; I chose a back massage and a facial. Both were very nice and extremely relaxing, though it was disappointing that my party was separated for these activities. We were all led to individual rooms, some in a different part of the hotel and were reunited after our treatments. This would be the only criticism of the spa. After our treatment, we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted, there were refreshments available as well as the pool facilities. It was a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.
However it was the restaurant which let the hotel down. It was a rather odd area, with waist high barriers separating it from the rest of the landing (it is on the first floor). The service was lukewarm: there were several pieces of cutlery missing from our table, and our white wine was served to us warm. We had to ask for an ice bucket and glasses for the wine. We were being served by what seemed like the restaurant manager, and were baffled that they were being made. The food was nice, but expensive for what it was.
Our stay was enjoyable overall, but our dinner experience was odd, and I wouldn't recommend the restaurant. But the rest of the hotel, including the spa is lovely and the location is great.
