Barcelo Capella Beach Hotel Juan Dolio Reviews
Updatd Review of Barcelo Capella Beach Resort Oct 02, 2011
I initially wrote a review of this resort a couple of days ago. After working nearly 60 consecutive days in Haiti I think that any place other than there would have been nice. Now to the reality of the situation.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. However, the rooms, or at least my room, was below average. The room smelled extremely musty. When I woke up this morning there was no hot water. The electricity, while on most of the time, is not terribly reliable. I had to keep changing outlets in order to charge my phones, computer, etc. Worst of all, the AC is only average at best. Not too bad at night but not great during the day.
The humidity is really high here. I laid my hat in the closet when I first got here. When I went to retrieve it, the hat was completely soaked. The room is pretty filthy under the beds, dressers, etc. There is an ice bucket but apparently no ice machines. And, there are often a bunch of dead bugs in the hallways. Your wife might not appreciate those. The pools are nice but quite crowded. Never really understood the lure of a pool when your only feet from the ocean. Oh well.
The ocean is beautiful but the beach is definitely not a white sand beach. After you get out in the water about 25 or 30 feet it becomes pretty rocky. Right near the beach is a natural reef. Word of warning, stay away from that (though the rip tide tends to send you that way). The water temperature was great. On 10/1 the beach became completely covered in drift wood and the water was pretty much out of the question. This morning on 10/2 it was pretty acceptable.
As far as the food, well, I've eaten in Iraq, Jordan, Germany, the UK, Haiti and now the DR. I did not find the food to be outstanding, but it was edible.
As far as the staff, the check-in staff seems to be pretty overwhelmed, especially on the weekends. At any one time there may be 50 people waiting to check in. And, internet costs $10 for 24 hours. I do want to point out one particular staff member, Diana Vargas who works in Guest Services. She went above and beyond to help me straighten out my reservation with Orbitz. That was nightmare in and of itself.
Overall, if you're looking for an all-inclusive at a decent price (I paid $63 per night) then it isn't bad. I would look at other alternatives though.
These are just my thoughts. If you have any questions, you can email me at email@example.com

Barcelo Capella Beach Resort - Juan Dolio, DR Oct 01, 2011
After working 59 consecutive days in Haiti as a police officer, I was looking for somewhere to enjoy a little R&R. While check-in was a nightmare, partially because of the volume of people and partially because of Orbitz, I'm glad I chose this place.
I especially want to give a shout-out to Diana Vargas of guest relations. After about 4 hours of trying to check in, she went the extra mile to help me get on the phone with Orbitz to get everything straightened out.
The grounds here are beautiful. It's a large resort. The rooms are a little aged and have a musty smell but it's not a big deal. Rooms are fairly spacious but not terribly clean.
The beach is not a white sand beach but it's nice. The water is clear and clean. There is plenty of space, and plenty of beach chairs. I've only had one meal since I got here and it wasn't too bad.
For what I'm paying per night, $63, I think it is well worth it. There is a small store across the street which has most of what you would need.
Overall, I would stay here again without hesitation. And believe me, I can always find plenty of things to complain about. In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my wife here.
The spa is expensive but you can actually get a decent massage on the beach for $25. Got hounded a little by the locals wanting to buy stuff but nothing I couldn't tolerate.
