A new and trendy steakhouse Apr 13, 2011
Barbecoa is a Jamie Oliver and Adam Perry Lang restaurant recently opened (early 2011) in a new shopping complex (One New Change) facing St Paul’s cathedral. I’m not one for the celebrity chefs typically but I can’t fault this place.

It is on the second floor with large windows on one side facing out to the buildings which can offer a nice view of the Cathedral. The design is contemporary; a nice change from stuffy dark wood panelled steakhouses. As you enter you are greeted with an open plan bar area with a dozen or so high top tables and another half dozen seats at the bar. The cocktail list is simple but intriguing with some classics and new concoctions. As you walk to the seating area a large glass window gives a glimpse at some massive steaks cooking on their charcoal grill and an open serving area shows a team of chefs preparing food.

The seating is a range of geometric shapes designed out of large red leather benches with tables dotted amongst them. It looked like a lot of tables setup for 4+ people in addition to a few two seaters. From the number of suits wandering around you can see it is geared up business entertaining, but don’t let that stop you if you want a great meal.

The menu is covered on a sheet of A3 in typical steakhouse style with starters, mains and side dishes. We opted for a rib-eye for two which was on special and special it was. The steak was massive, cooked perfectly and tasted great. I had some pork scratching to start which is a nice English treat. The dessert was top notch too, a flourless chocolate cake which was almost a meal in itself. The wine list is not too big giving a good range or prices and options.

Aside from the food the next best thing was the service. We were well looked after with prompt service and everything we could have wanted. It seems such a rarity now in London to get great service so when combined with great food you’ve got a winning combination. I highly recommend this place for business people and couples alike. It is a high end steakhouse so expect those kinds of prices but well worth it when you want to splurge out or impress.
