Baratashvili Station Jul 05, 2016
From the Botanical Gardens, follow the stream of tourists past a row of souvenir stalls down the side of the gardens, and you'll end up at the bottom of a grand staircase leading to one of Sokhumi's minor railway stations. The station building looks quite grand from below, but climb the stairs and the reality is somewhat different. The windows have no glass, and bushes grow where ticket kiosks once stood.

Since the war, Abkhazia's railway has been out of action, save for a daily train to Moscow from the main station, so all these

wonderful old buildings have been left to decay. Make sure to look inside and see the ornate ceiling and floor, slowly peeling away in the heat.

If, like me, you've got a fascination for abandoned but beautiful buildings, then Abkhazia is full of them. Some are obvious, like the massive government building just round the corner, but others like this are not difficult to find. Nearly every town has a handful of elegant old buildings slowly crumbling away in a neglected corner. Train stations in particular tend to be fantastic places to explore if you can get access.

Most of the tourists passing through Baratashvili Station weren't there to look at the peeling paintwork though. They just used the station as a shortcut across the railway tracks to Sokhumi's biggest draw, the depressing Monkey Park up the hill which was not something I wanted to see.
