Acadia National Park

Despite the brisk competition from other wonderlands in Maine, Acadia wins the top spot for natural beauty in my heart.  There is something special about mountains on the ocean.  Even if the mountains are relative midgets (Cadillac Mountain is the highest point here at 1,530 feet - still the highest on the East Coast of the US).   Cadillac Mountain is a good place to begin out tour of Acadia National Park as there is a road to the summit and most visitors drive up …

Bar Harbor

We arrived in Bar Harbor around mid afternoon, and checked into the Days Inn on Eden Street.  Just a few minutes outside of downtown Bar Harbor, this location would be an excellent "home base" for us for the next couple of days.  I chose this hotel for it's location, price, and good reviews I had read online.   Located across the street from a ferry line to Nova Scotia, our room was on the upper (top) floor, with an ocean view. Melissa and I  unpacked and got settled …

Me and some of my friends went on a vacation to Maine. We mostly stayed in Bar Harbor, but we also went to Portland and Boothbay. We had a great time. People were very nice. The one thing I noticed about Maine was how clean it was. Most of the time you didn't ever see a cigarette butt on the ground. It was a little expensive for food in some of the towns. But the views of the land were worth ever second. It was a very beautiful place to go. I recommend it to anyone.

Travel Day
posted by:
Jun 02, 2008 - Jun 07, 2008
On Tuesday we drove the Park Loop Road at Acadia National Park.  It was a little overcast but still made for a beautiful day.  We made stops at  Sieur de Monts Spring, Bear Brook Picnic Area, Beaver Dam Pond, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cove and Bubble Pond.  We also stoped at the beginning of Precipice Trail which is at the base of Champlain Mountain.  The trail was closed due to the fact that the peregrine falcons were nesting in the cliffs.   We tried to g…

First Day in Bar Harbor
posted by:

Today was Andy’s birthday. We actually had a really good day. In the morning we went to Jeannie’s for breakfast. Andy had the oatmeal French toast. They make their own bread for it. He said it was awesome. I had the pancakes, and they were normal. After breakfast I went to the spa and had a massage. It was okay, but not the best I have ever had. The spa was at another hotel owned by the same company, but it wasn’t as nice to hang out in as others I have been to. After my massage we went…

Rainy Day!
posted by:
Aug 03, 2007 - Aug 13, 2007
We headed to Acadia National Park.  I'm not sure looking at trees really thrilled the girls all that much.  As we were getting out of the car to go down to the ocean, we heard a loud noise and looked up and saw a tree falling toward us!  My husband jumped in front of our baby and caught a piece of the tree that was heading toward her.  The tree landed on another vehicle and we were so thankful that it didn't land on us!  I was amazed when we arrived at the ocean.…

US Road Trip - Summer 2007: Bar Harbor Travel Photos
posted by:
Jun 08, 2007 - Aug 30, 2007
I'm spending 4 months exploring the US and what I want to do with my life for the next 5 years - a combination of road trips through the most scenic areas, camping, and staying in 2 of my favorite cities (Chicago and San Francisco). I'm packing my trusty Mazda Tribute with a box of books, a tent, a GPS system, and lots of music and heading out in June.

The CAT ferry
posted by:
Jun 19, 2006 - Jun 22, 2006
We had to be up at 05:00 am to be at the ferry at 07:00. The seas were pretty rough and we were not able to go as fast as reported in the flyers, but it was amzing to see the size of this vessel. There were over 120 vehicles and most of them were trucks and large campers. Jack had to stay in the car, but he did well. When we got off the ferry, we travelled up the coast to  a campground for the night.

So here I am in Bar Harbor, Maine. Have made it to my final East Coast destination before I start heading back West to california. Now about that. Now that I am here I have absolutely fell in love with the area here, and don't really want to drive back across the U.S. to california. I have no job there, I'd most likely just end up having to crash at a friends house or one of my parents house anyway. I have absolutely nothing to really go back for, nothing waiting for me to come back. Not even…

Heading North
posted by:
Sep 04, 2008 - Sep 07, 2008
Acadia National Park is on the most-eastern edge of North America, which means the sun hits it before any other part of the continent each day.  Pretty cool.  In fact, except for some eastern reaches of Brazil, the sun arrives here before anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere each day.  Pretty cool indeed.  Brian and I agree that seeing the sunrise before anyone else on the continent is worth waking up early for.  So at 5:15am, the alarm sounds and we…

We went into town for breakfast and found a little place tucked down an alley called Cafe This Way.  It was a great surprise.  It looks like it used to be a garage with a concrete floor and a still functioning garage door, but the place is hippy artsy with red walls and Georgia O'Keefe-like art all over the place.  The menu is eclectic and broad.  I had a terrific dish of eggs Benedict with smoked trout. After that we drove to the gardens, Thuya and Asticou, which aren't …
